Agra Fort

Agra Fort is the clearest companion to the Taj Mahal and the best place in the city to understand Agra as an imperial capital rather than a single-monument destination. Official tourism material describes it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Yamuna and presents it as the former Mughal seat of power, with its great red sandstone enclosure giving way to audience halls, mosques, palaces and river-facing pavilions. The Department of Tourism’s Agra Fort page specifically confirms that visitors encounter Diwan-i-Am, or the Hall of Public Audience, along with royal pavilions, Nagina Masjid, Mina Masjid, Macchi Bhavan, Khas Mahal, Shish Mahal, Shah Jahani Mahal and the Zenana Mina Bazaar. Incredible India also highlights Musamman Burj and the fort’s continuing historical association with Shah Jahan. Access is more straightforward than at the Taj, but still needs precision. The official Agra Fort page states that entry is allowed through the Amar Singh Gate only, and that part of the fort remains under Indian Army control and is not open to the public. The same page lists opening hours from sunrise to sunset, while Incredible India gives a daily timing of 06:00 to 18:00. Both sources support its present operation as a standard daytime monument visit in Agra city. Ranked second, it offers the richest historical complement to the Taj without leaving the city boundary.
