Amsterdam Museum
Amsterdam city; current public locations include Cultuurpark Westergas, Pazzanistraat 19-23, 1014 DB Amsterdam, and Huis Willet-Holthuysen, Herengracht 605, 1017 CE Amsterdam

Amsterdam Museum remains the clearest institutional introduction to Amsterdam itself, but it currently works as a network museum rather than a single all-purpose city-centre site. The museum states that its historic main home in the former Burgerweeshuis on Kalverstraat is under renovation and is expected to reopen in 2029, while its temporary main location at Amstel 51 closed in December 2025. For visitors now, the most relevant public point of entry is Amsterdam in Motion at Cultuurpark Westergas, where the museum presents the story of the city through a large multimedia model and an accompanying exhibition. The museum also operates at Huis Willet-Holthuysen on Herengracht, adding a second permanent place where its wider programme can be encountered. That changing structure matters when planning a visit. This is still a legitimate top-ten Amsterdam experience because the institution’s purpose is to explain the city’s history, communities and development, but the visit is no longer the straightforward ‘go to Kalverstraat’ museum stop suggested by older guides. Treat it as a museum organisation with current visitor-facing locations, not as a single open building in the centre. Check the official tickets and visits page before you go so you choose the right site, opening hours and exhibition format for the day.
