andBeyond Mnemba Island

Off Zanzibar’s north-eastern coast, andBeyond Mnemba Island keeps the Indian Ocean close. Twelve open-air bandas sit between a casuarina forest and a coral-sand beach, their thatched roofs and shaded spaces framing a stay shaped by the sea. The accommodation includes a family banda, while the small number of guests gives the island an intimate scale. Open sides admit the breeze, and the beach is only a few steps from bed. This is somewhere to spend much of the day outdoors. Snorkelling and diving explore the surrounding reefs, while dhow cruises provide a different view of the island at sunset. Yoga and low-tide reef walks offer gentler ways to fill the hours. The island also has a coral nursery and turtle nesting grounds that visitors can learn about during their stay. Meals can follow guests’ preferred rhythm, leaving space for a late swim or an unhurried afternoon. Mnemba particularly suits travellers who want a small island retreat after time on safari.
