Avlija occupies a former family garden on Sarajevo’s Sumbul Avde street, with plants, rustic furnishings and a covered courtyard giving it the feel of a private retreat. The restaurant grew from a gathering place used by the family and their friends into a kitchen serving Bosnian and international dishes. The menu offers a substantial introduction to local cooking: klepe dumplings with meat and cream sauce, veal and mushroom maslanica, and meatballs served in a freshly baked bread bowl. Breakfast brings eggs, cheeses and fried dough, while sharing platters combine cured beef, sujuk sausage, regional cheeses and ajvar. Walnut-filled tufahija and homemade apple pie round out the sweeter choices.
