Bagan Archaeological Area
Mandalay Region, Myanmar
Bagan’s power comes from spread and repetition across open country rather than from one dominant monument. Temples, stupas, monasteries and archaeological remains extend across a broad plain beside the Ayeyarwady, creating an experience shaped by distance, light and movement between sites as much as by individual architecture. That makes Bagan particularly appealing to travellers who enjoy building their own sequence of discovery. It rewards unhurried exploration and a willingness to think in terms of panorama as well as detail. It remains top-ten worthy because it offers a form of Buddhist archaeological landscape not duplicated elsewhere in this list, even though practical travel conditions in Myanmar still require careful checking close to departure.
