Blankenese feels far removed from Hamburg’s busiest streets, with cottages, gardens and winding stairways climbing the hillside above the Elbe. Walk down towards the river, pause to watch passing ships and choose a route back through the narrow lanes. The stair quarter rewards wandering, but the gradients are real, so comfortable shoes help. Combine it with a riverside walk if you have time, or keep the visit local and return to the centre by S-Bahn.
