Cape Evans historic hut visit by permit
Cape Evans, Ross Island, McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea region
Cape Evans is the most restricted experience in this list, but it remains one of Antarctica’s greatest heritage visits when undertaken under permit. The draw is Scott’s Terra Nova expedition hut, one of the continent’s most important preserved historic interiors, backed by Ross Island’s volcanic landscape and views towards Erebus. For travellers on rare Ross Sea voyages, this is less a routine excursion than a serious, conservation-led encounter with the heroic-age record left in situ. Current Antarctic Treaty guidance is explicit: Cape Evans lies within ASPA 155 and entry is prohibited except in accordance with a permit carried on site. All visitors inside the protected area must be with a trained guide, the hut is locked, annual and at-one-time caps apply, and the Magnetic Hut is closed for asbestos-related safety reasons. Because access depends on permits, conservation management, sea-ice conditions and itinerary design, this should be treated as a potential specialist heritage visit rather than an open-call tourist stop.
