City Grocery occupies Oxford's Courthouse Square, where exposed brick, heart-pine floors and white tablecloths frame contemporary Southern cooking. Chef John Currence established the restaurant as part of the square's revival, with Jon 'JD' Davis now leading its kitchen as chef de cuisine. Lunch and dinner provide different ways into the restaurant, from an oversized muffaletta at midday to a longer evening meal. The upstairs bar serves house cocktails, and the wine list ranges broadly enough to support different tastes at the table. Candlelight gives the dining room its evening character, while the square-facing address keeps the restaurant part of downtown Oxford's daily life.
