Cross-Island Trek
Rarotonga, Cook Islands
The Cross-Island Trek is Rarotonga’s classic inland hike, taking walkers through the island’s mountainous interior on a route that Cook Islands Tourism describes as about 6 kilometres and typically 3 to 3.5 hours. It is one of the destination’s best-known active experiences because it contrasts sharply with the lagoon-focused coast, leading into forested slopes, ridge views and the Te Rua Manga area before finishing near Papua Waterfall. Official tourism guidance notes marked trail sections and also promotes guided options through Maunga Tours, which makes it a practical inclusion for visitors wanting either an independent challenge or a supported trek. It belongs in the guide as a landmark Rarotonga experience rather than a vague generic hike.
