District Six Museum

The District Six Museum tells the story of a diverse Cape Town neighbourhood disrupted by apartheid forced removals. Photographs, personal possessions, recorded memories and other traces of everyday life make the history tangible. It is a powerful counterpart to Robben Island because it centres community and home as well as national politics. Choose it for a thoughtful city visit and allow enough time to engage with individual accounts rather than moving quickly through the displays.
