East Side Gallery

The East Side Gallery is the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall at its original location and one of the city’s most resonant open-air historic sites. The Berlin Wall Foundation describes it as a 1.3-kilometre stretch between Ostbahnhof and Oberbaumbrücke, where 118 artists from 21 countries created murals on the former border wall in 1990. That combination of preserved border structure and post-reunification painting gives the site its distinctive power: it is not simply public art, and not simply a memorial, but a place where the physical reality of division and the optimism of 1989–90 remain visible together. It is therefore one of the most immediate places in Berlin to engage with the Wall in situ. Access to the outdoor site is straightforward, as the East Side Gallery is open around the clock. The Berlin Wall Foundation also operates a visitor information centre at Mühlenstraße 73, which serves as a meeting point for tours and educational programmes. Visitors should still expect an active heritage site rather than a static monument: conservation work, preservation debates and occasional changes around the waterfront form part of the place’s continuing story as both memorial and urban landmark.
