Elizabeth Castle

St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands, Castle Green, St Aubin’s Bay, JE2 3NU

Elizabeth Castle is one of Jersey’s signature days out: a sea-locked fortress reached either by ferry or, at low tide, on foot across the causeway. Its setting in St Aubin’s Bay gives the visit a dramatic sense of arrival, while the castle itself layers military history, stone ramparts and interpretation across more than 400 years of defence. The experience works well for first-time visitors because it combines a major landmark, good harbour-to-castle views and a clear sense of Jersey’s strategic position in the Channel Islands. It deserves the top slot because it is both historically important and unmistakably Jersey: coastal, immersive and memorable. The site is managed by Jersey Heritage and is open seasonally, with 2026 opening dates published by the operator. Under-11s must be accompanied by an adult or responsible person aged 16+; booking ahead is generally not required except for larger groups.
