Nakijin’s curving limestone walls follow the contours of a wooded ridge, preserving the outline of a fortress associated with the former Hokuzan kingdom. The reward is in walking the grounds slowly and seeing how the defences fit the landscape. An English-language guide, when available, adds useful context to the ruins. Early cherry blossoms bring a different atmosphere in winter, but the walls and views make this a worthwhile visit throughout the year.
