Habitation Murat
Grand-Bourg, Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe, France

Habitation Murat is the most convincing heritage stop on Marie-Galante and one of the best reasons to treat the island as more than a beach detour. The former sugar estate, now presented as a heritage and eco-museum site, helps explain Marie-Galante’s plantation landscape, labour history and economic identity. Buildings, grounds and interpretation give form to a history that still shapes the island’s atmosphere. It deserves inclusion partly because it strengthens the ranking geographically. Guadeloupe is an archipelago, and Marie-Galante should appear for more than generic coastal appeal. Travellers already crossing by ferry will find this a far more destination-specific experience than simply choosing another attractive stretch of sand.
