Historic-centre walk: Piazza Navona to the Trevi Fountain
Rome, Italy; Start at Piazza Navona, 00186 Rome; finish at Piazza di Trevi

Rome's historic centre is at its most persuasive when the route between monuments becomes part of the experience. Begin in Piazza Navona, where fountains and façades give the long public space a theatrical character, then work through the smaller streets towards the Pantheon area and the Trevi Fountain. The sequence alternates enclosure and sudden openness in a way that a bus itinerary cannot reproduce. Navona's Fountain of the Four Rivers and Trevi's sculptural frontage are natural stopping points, but allow room for less celebrated details: an unexpected courtyard view, a shopfront or a change in the shape of the street. A café break can give the walk a useful rhythm without turning it into a programme of restaurant reservations. The public route is free, and entry to the Pantheon is a separate visit. At Trevi, access to the closest basin-side area has required a ticket for most visitors since February 2026; viewing from the surrounding square remains distinct from that controlled area. Check the official arrangements and any maintenance notices. Comfortable footwear, patience at crossings and a flexible route matter more here than trying to reach every landmark at a prescribed minute.
