Hofkirche
Innsbruck, Austria

Twenty-eight bronze figures surround Maximilian I’s monumental tomb in the Hofkirche, creating one of Innsbruck’s most arresting interiors. The emperor is actually buried in Wiener Neustadt, so the elaborate monument here is a cenotaph. Look closely at the figures rather than simply taking in the group: ancestors, rulers and legendary heroes share the space. The church also contains the tomb of Andreas Hofer, bringing Tyrolean history into the same remarkable setting as imperial ambition.
