Kinabatangan River

Kinabatangan District, Sabah, Malaysia

The Kinabatangan River is one of Borneo’s defining wildlife journeys, offering boat-based access to a rich riverine landscape of forest, oxbow lakes and floodplain habitat. Sabah Tourism presents it as a flagship destination in eastern Sabah, where visitors come for the atmosphere of the river itself as much as for the chance of seeing proboscis monkeys, birds and other wildlife along the banks. This is not a fixed-site attraction but a guided nature experience shaped by water levels, weather and responsible operator logistics. It belongs high in a Borneo list because it captures the island’s most recognisable river-wildlife setting in a form that is both distinctive and widely visitor-relevant.
