King's Joy
China

King’s Joy occupies a historic courtyard house beside Beijing’s Yonghe Temple, giving its vegetarian cooking a setting closely tied to the surrounding hutong neighbourhood. Bamboo, a central courtyard, timber screens and a glass-roofed dining room create a calm atmosphere, with natural light playing a prominent role in the interiors. Chef Gary Yin’s kitchen works primarily with seasonal, organically grown produce. Steaming, slow cooking and sautéing are used to bring out the character of individual ingredients. Multi-course menus are lacto-ovo vegetarian, with vegan versions available on request. A meal here lends itself to an unhurried exploration of plant-based Chinese cooking, paired with a visit to the nearby temple and historic streets.
