Knossos Palace

Knossos gives Crete's Minoan past an architectural scale that objects alone cannot convey. Courtyards, storage areas and the famous reconstructed sections reveal the complexity of a palace that also served administrative and religious purposes. A good guide helps distinguish surviving fabric from Arthur Evans's later interventions and separates archaeology from the legends surrounding Minos and the Minotaur. Pair the site with Heraklion's archaeological museum to connect the buildings with their original objects and frescoes.
