L'Albatros serves French brasserie cooking in an old carriage house on the Case Western Reserve University campus in Cleveland's University Circle. The historic building gives the restaurant an intimate setting, with a secluded patio extending the dining space in suitable weather. Owner Zack Bruell's kitchen combines familiar French dishes with contemporary touches. The menu includes onion soup gratinée, escargots with garlic and fennel butter, pork and veal terrine, and a mushroom preparation on French toast. Cheese has a prominent place, with selections of three, five or seven varieties. A broad wine list completes a restaurant whose character comes from its carriage-house surroundings and a detailed treatment of brasserie classics.
