Lagoon swimming and snorkelling at Nukunonu

Nukunonu atoll, Tokelau

Nukunonu’s lagoon is the clearest introduction to Tokelau’s atoll landscape and the activity that most closely matches what visitors actually come for. The water here is the setting for easy swimming, snorkelling and spending time on the reef-fringed lagoon edge, with the atoll’s small scale making it simple to move between shore and water. Because Tokelau has no developed tourism infrastructure, the appeal is not a resort beach day but a chance to experience a working island lagoon used by local people every day. This ranks first because it is the most broadly accessible and the most characteristic visitor experience across the territory, while still being concrete and place-based. It also fits the official guidance that Tokelau’s main recreational activity is lagoon and reef water time, with Nukunonu the only atoll currently described as having commercial accommodation for visitors.
