Likoma and Chizumulu Islands
Likoma District, Lake Malawi, Malawi

Likoma and Chizumulu Islands remain a worthwhile Lake Malawi inclusion because they turn a broad lake idea into a specific freshwater-island experience. These inhabited Malawian islands sit close to the Mozambican shore yet feel culturally and geographically distinct, mixing boat or small-aircraft access with quiet beaches, clear water, village life and the striking improbability of St Peter’s Cathedral on Likoma. The journey there is part of the point: this is a slower, more deliberate experience than a simple lakeshore stay. The earlier weakness here was not that the islands were false or inaccessible, but that independent curation for the exact combined-islands formulation was thinner than ideal. That gap is now better covered by current Malawi destination material and recent independent specialist travel guidance that explicitly links Likoma with day trips or onward exploration to smaller Chizumulu. It remains a lightly sourced market compared with Africa’s biggest headline attractions, but the selection is now exact, current and honestly qualified rather than vague.
