Matapa Chasm

Hikutavake, Niue

Matapa Chasm is one of Niue’s signature natural swimming spots and an excellent introduction to the island’s sea-track landscape. A short forest walk leads to a sheltered chasm with calm, clear water held between near-vertical limestone walls. It is one of the island’s most accessible places to experience Niue’s geology, marine life, and the contrast between the exposed coast and the protected inland waterway. The appeal is both scenic and practical: visitors come for snorkelling, swimming, and the easy sense of orientation created by the marked track from the road. It also pairs naturally with the nearby Talava Arches walk, making this area one of the best half-day outdoors combinations on the island. This is an editorially strong top position because it is iconic, widely promoted, and representative of Niue’s core appeal as an outdoor destination.
