The National Archaeological Museum gives the ancient world a vivid presence in the middle of modern Naples. Its collections bring together monumental Farnese sculpture, frescoes, objects from daily life and material from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Rather than trying to see every room, choose a few themes and allow time to look closely at the surviving details. Gallery access changes during restoration and reorganisation, so check the current room schedule; the museum presently states that the Alexander Mosaic is not on display.
