Ōhori Park

Ōhori Koen, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka, Japan

Ōhori Park is one of Fukuoka’s most useful and characteristic urban spaces: a large waterside park in Chuo-ku that is easy to reach from the city centre and substantial enough to occupy anything from a short break to a half-day wander. The official Fukuoka City tourism guide describes it as a popular relaxation spot accessible by subway and bus from Hakata and Tenjin. Its central lake takes up almost half the park, with an approximately two-kilometre walking route around the water. The same official feature explains that the park opened in 1929 and reused the old outer moat of Fukuoka Castle, which gives the landscape a historical layer as well as a scenic one. In practice, this is more than a simple lakeside stroll. The official guide notes a children’s park, Japanese garden, Noh theatre, islands linked by four bridges, and Boat House facilities with boat rentals; it also says the full circuit takes about 40 minutes. That makes Ōhori Park flexible for different kinds of visitors, whether you want a straightforward walk, birdwatching, a rowing or paddle-boat session, or a pause between nearby cultural stops. Its location beside the castle and Maizuru Park also means it combines naturally with other major central Fukuoka sights without needing a long transfer across the city.
