Petermann Island mixed penguin colonies

Petermann Island, Penola Strait region, Antarctic Peninsula

Petermann Island stands out because it offers more than a single-species colony. Specialist Antarctic curators value it as one of the few well-known peninsula stops where gentoo, Adélie and chinstrap penguins may all be part of the story, with blue-eyed shags and skuas adding to the sense that this is a densely layered wildlife site rather than a simple beach landing. Its position near the Lemaire Channel also gives it extra scenic pull when conditions align. Current guidance shows why visits need close control: there are closed areas protecting breeding Adélies and shags, a cap on visitors ashore, one ship at a time and a wildlife rest curfew overnight. Paths and standing areas matter here, especially later in the season when birds spread out and terrain can be muddy or snow-free. If sea ice or swell blocks landing, nearby cruising may still reveal bergs, seals and the island’s low profile against surrounding mountains, but no operator can promise a walk ashore.
