Planty Park
Stare Miasto, Kraków, Poland, ring park encircling the Old Town

Planty Park is the green belt wrapped around Kraków’s Old Town, occupying the line of the former medieval defences. The city’s Municipal Greenspace Authority identifies it as a historic park in District I that surrounds Stare Miasto and is enclosed by streets including Westerplatte, św. Gertrudy, Podzamcze, Straszewskiego, Podwale, Dunajewskiego and Basztowa. The same official source notes that Planty consists of eight named gardens linked into one continuous central walking route, so it works both as a park in its own right and as the main pedestrian framework for exploring the historic core. For visitors, Planty is best understood as part route, part pause. It offers shady paths, benches and frequent access points rather than a single headline monument or controlled attraction. That makes it especially useful between the station side of the centre, the northern edge by the Barbican, and the southern stretches towards Wawel. It ranks here because it is free, unmistakably central and genuinely helps explain Kraków’s urban form, but it is less of a destination than the city’s major interiors and museums. Even so, for a first-time visit it is one of the clearest ways to understand how the Old Town fits together on foot.
