Playa Vik Jose Ignacio
Uruguay

Playa Vik José Ignacio makes architecture a central part of a beach holiday. Created with Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, the retreat faces the coast from Playa Mansa, using large expanses of glass to frame the sea and changing light. At its centre stands the building known as the Sculpture. Its inclined façade opens towards the ocean, while a monumental bronze entrance by Pablo Atchugarry establishes the importance of art before guests reach their rooms. Contemporary Uruguayan and international works continue through the interiors. The relationship between the accommodation, collection and coast gives the property a character that rewards looking closely as well as looking out. Dining includes the retreat's fish barbecue and meals overlooking the water towards the fishing boats and Punta del Este. For travellers drawn to design, Playa Vik offers a particularly distinctive way to settle into José Ignacio's seaside rhythm.
