Punting on the River Cam

River Cam, Cambridge, England, United Kingdom

Punting on the River Cam is the experience most closely associated with Cambridge itself. It offers a relaxed, low-speed way to see the city’s historic centre from a very different angle, with views of college gardens, lawns, bridges and riverside architecture along the College Backs. Because the route runs through such a concentrated stretch of the university landscape, it is as much about place as it is about transport or leisure. The experience can be enjoyed with a chauffeur or by hiring a punt for independent use, giving visitors a choice between a guided outing and a more hands-on one. It suits warm-weather visits especially well, but remains one of the city’s most distinctive activities at almost any time of year. For first-time visitors, it provides an easy introduction to Cambridge’s relationship with the river; for repeat visitors, it is often the simplest way to slow down and appreciate how the colleges meet the water. Few city experiences are more characteristic or more recognisably Cambridge than this one.
