Qeqertarsuaq and Lyngmark Glacier area
Qeqertarsuaq, Disko Bay, Greenland; island of Disko, town of Qeqertarsuaq
Qeqertarsuaq offers one of Greenland’s most distinctive combinations of geology, scenery and seasonal adventure. Unlike much of Greenland, Disko Island is volcanic, and the landscape around Qeqertarsuaq gives the island a striking character of its own. Visitors come for hiking, dramatic coastlines, whale-watching conditions in the wider bay and, in season, the rare experience of summer dog sledding on Lyngmark Glacier. It deserves a high ranking because it is more than a scenic stop: it is a destination with its own geography and a clear sense of local identity. The mix of volcanic terrain, glacier access and Disko Bay wildlife makes it a rewarding place to spend time rather than just pass through. It also balances the guide by shifting beyond Nuuk and Ilulissat into a different corner of Greenland’s west coast.
