Reef snorkelling off Atafu

Atafu atoll, Tokelau

Atafu’s reef and lagoon environment is one of the most distinctive natural experiences in Tokelau. The atoll’s narrow land, shallow lagoon and surrounding reef make it a strong place for observing the marine side of Tokelau life, whether that means snorkelling, wading or simply watching the changing colour of the water. Atafu is the northernmost atoll, and its smaller scale gives the visit a particularly remote, self-contained feel. This is placed second because it offers the same essential Tokelau experience as Nukunonu but in a different setting, and Atafu’s remoteness adds editorial variety to the list. It is a better fit for a things-to-do guide than a generic village stop because the reef and lagoon are the feature, not a built attraction.
