Rock Islands Southern Lagoon kayak and boat exploration
Koror State, Palau

The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon is one of the Pacific’s most distinctive seascapes, a maze of limestone islands, sheltered channels and luminous water that makes most sense when experienced in motion. Travelling by boat or kayak, visitors move through passages that repeatedly reset the scale, from intimate mangrove-edged sections to broader lagoon views. The appeal lies less in a single spectacle than in being inside a protected marine landscape. It earns its place because it extends the guide beyond the better-covered Australia–New Zealand axis without sacrificing significance. Palau’s lagoon geography feels genuinely different from a standard reef excursion, and recognised travel coverage does support kayaking and water-based exploration here. Evidence is still lighter on the exact phrasing than ideal, but the underlying experience class is strong enough to remain the ranking’s clearest Micronesian inclusion.
