Römerberg and the New Frankfurt Old Town

Altstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Germany; Römerberg, 60311 Frankfurt am Main

Römerberg and the New Frankfurt Old Town form the most concentrated introduction to Frankfurt’s historic centre. Frankfurt’s official tourism material presents the New Old Town as the city’s smallest district, completed in 2018 after a major restoration project between the Römer and the Cathedral, and describes it as a place of houses, plazas, cafés, shops and museums in the heart of the city. That makes this more than a single square: it is a connected old-town walk where visitors can move between civic landmarks, reconstructed streets and traces of earlier settlement. The official city map also identifies Römerberg and the Dom/Römer area among Frankfurt’s sightseeing attractions, confirming the location firmly within the central Altstadt visitor core. I have kept it near the top because it delivers the strongest sense of Frankfurt’s historical identity with almost no planning friction. This is primarily public outdoor space, so it suits first-time visitors, short stays and self-guided wandering especially well. The nearby underground, tram access and the Dom/Römer setting make it easy to combine with the cathedral, riverfront and museums. As a first encounter with Frankfurt, it offers orientation as much as atmosphere.
