Runaway Ghaut
Woodlands/Salem area, central-west Montserrat
Runaway Ghaut is a short stop rather than a major excursion, but it is one of Montserrat’s most characterful small landmarks. The spring-fed ghaut is associated with the island’s best-known local legend: drink the cool water and you are destined to return. That folklore gives the place far more personality than a simple roadside spring, and the shaded ravine setting adds to its charm. It suits travellers who enjoy local stories and the kinds of modest places that carry outsized cultural meaning. The visit is easy to combine with Salem, the Centre Hills side of the island or a wider sightseeing loop. It does not compete with the volcano, viewpoints or principal hikes for scale, which is why it ranks lower, but it is authentic, distinctive and more convincingly documented than weaker filler-style alternatives.
