Scenic landscapes and kopjes

The Serengeti’s scenery is part of the attraction in its own right. TANAPA describes the park through its endless plains, kopjes and riverscape beauty, while UNESCO’s World Heritage account also points to the vast open grassland and rocky outcrops that define the landscape. Together, they explain why this is such a compelling place to travel slowly, with time to notice the shape of the land as well as the movement of animals across it. Long sightlines, low relief and scattered granite kopjes create a powerful sense of scale, especially in the softer light of dawn and late afternoon. For visitors who enjoy photography, landscape appreciation or simply a stronger feeling of place, the Serengeti offers a setting that is memorable even when wildlife is momentarily out of view. It is most rewarding when paired with game viewing, but the scenery itself remains one of the park’s most distinctive qualities. In a destination celebrated for animals, the land still does a great deal of the storytelling.
