Second Empire occupies Raleigh's historic Dodd-Hinsdale House, combining a restaurant and tavern within a distinctive old building. The restaurant opened in 1997, and chef Daniel Schurr leads a menu that moves across American and international influences. A recent menu includes duck confit with black-eyed peas, Cajun-seasoned quail, seafood paella and pan-roasted scallops with curry corn sauce. The combinations give familiar ingredients a broad range of accompanying flavours. A chef's table offers a separate experience for two to four diners inside the kitchen with Schurr and his team. This provides a closer view of preparation for guests who want the work behind the meal to be part of the evening.
