Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street
Liwan District, Guangzhou, China, Shangjiu Road, Xiajiu Road, Dishifu Road and surrounding Xiguan area
Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is one of Guangzhou’s best-known traditional shopping streets and remains a useful place to experience the older commercial character of Liwan. Official Guangzhou tourism material identifies it as a commercial pedestrian street in Liwan District, in the old Xiguan area, running from Shangjiu Road and Xiajiu Road eastwards towards Dishifu Road and crossing Baohua Road and Wenchang Road. The same source describes a stretch of roughly 1,200 metres with more than 300 shops, which helps explain why the street works less as a single landmark and more as a long browse through retail, snacks and everyday city life. Come here for the street itself: arcaded façades, dense foot traffic, old-brand shops, casual dining and the sense of a historic trading quarter still functioning as part of the modern city. It is especially rewarding for travellers interested in people-watching and food rather than formal sightseeing. General pedestrian access is open and there is no area-wide admission fee, but each shop, restaurant or mall keeps its own opening hours. Official municipal material also confirms continuing upgrading and activation of the Shangxiajiu area, so visitors should expect an active commercial environment rather than a preserved museum street.
