Sipadan Island

Sipadan rises from deep water off the east coast of Sabah, creating a dramatic transition from a small forested island to steep underwater walls. The surrounding sea supports coral, schooling fish and larger marine life, giving the destination a character distinct from the shallower coastal reefs nearby. For divers, the interest lies in this combination of vertical scenery and an active open-water environment. Barracuda Point is associated with large schools of fish, while the island's drop-off provides another memorable setting. Turtles, reef sharks and other marine animals may be encountered around the reefs, although each dive depends on conditions and the movement of wildlife. The range of sites allows guides to build a programme around the group's experience and the state of the sea. Access is managed through a permit system, and visits are arranged with operators based around the wider Semporna area and neighbouring islands. Planning ahead is therefore important, particularly when Sipadan is the main reason for the trip. Time elsewhere in the region can add contrasting reef and marine experiences. Sipadan is most rewarding as a carefully organised diving destination, with the protected island and its surrounding waters remaining the clear focus.
