Skansin (The fort)

Tórshavn, Streymoy, Faroe Islands

Skansin is Tórshavn’s historic fortress, set above the harbour with wide views over the capital and the approaches to the bay. It offers a different kind of sightseeing from the more scenic cliffs and waterfalls: here the appeal is maritime history, defensive architecture and a clean lookout point over the town. For visitors who want to understand how the capital relates to the sea, Skansin is an excellent companion to Tinganes. The site is compact and easy to combine with nearby harbour and old-town walks, which makes it a practical inclusion in a city day. Official tourism material highlights its wartime role and views, giving it a clear place in the islands’ heritage trail. It may not be as visually dramatic as the big natural landmarks, but it is one of the most meaningful urban stops in the Faroe Islands.
