Speicherstadt
Speicherstadt, Germany

Speicherstadt’s red-brick warehouses rise directly from narrow canals, linked by bridges that give changing views as you walk. Built for Hamburg’s port trade, the district forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the nearby Kontorhausviertel and Chilehaus. Look for the Wasserschloss and the ornate warehouse headquarters, then pause for coffee in a former storage building. A slow walk here makes a useful contrast to the newer glass-and-steel architecture of neighbouring HafenCity.
