The Painted Lady
Oregon

The Painted Lady brings a seasonal tasting menu into a Victorian house in downtown Newberg. Opened by Allen Routt and Jessica Bagley in 2005, the restaurant makes a small-scale architectural setting part of an evening in Oregon wine country. The menu follows ingredients from the Willamette Valley and further afield, using several courses to explore their possibilities. Recent preparations have included miso custard with Dungeness crab, honey-mustard-marinated black cod and a pepper-crusted bison strip loin, illustrating the range of techniques within the sequence. Wine pairings can accompany the meal, supported by a cellar that extends beyond local producers. The house and its picket-fence entrance give the arrival an intimate character, while the tasting format encourages guests to give the evening to the kitchen’s changing selection rather than rush between separate plans.
