Walk the settlement and coral tracks

Tokelau settlements on Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo

Walking is one of the most practical and revealing ways to experience Tokelau, because the settlements are tiny and there are only limited vehicles. A slow walk through the village and along coral tracks shows the layout of homes, stores, churches and administrative buildings, while also giving a sense of the atoll’s scale. On such a compact landmass, the journey itself is the attraction. This is ranked sixth because it is less specialised than the lagoon or cultural experiences, but it is one of the most authentic things a visitor can do. It helps make sense of daily life on an atoll where walking is often the most reliable means of getting around.
