Wat Mai stands beside the former Royal Palace, making it easy to include in a walk through the centre. Its layered roof and richly worked golden reliefs reward more attention than a quick photograph from the street. Look for scenes from everyday life and Buddhist stories across the decorated surfaces. Visit quietly, cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering the hall. Pair it with the palace while leaving time to appreciate each place separately.
