Red Sea or Maldives
Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea resorts have made the overwater villa a new proposition. But the best choice between them and the Maldives depends on what happens after you have admired the view.

An overwater villa is an efficient daydream. It removes most of the complications of a holiday and leaves a deck, a ladder and an improbable quantity of blue. The difficulty comes when you start booking. Two villas that appear to promise precisely the same escape can deliver very different weeks.
Begin with the journey
For a shorter break, [Baros Maldives](https://10best.world/maldives/places/global-place-bee493f34393/) has an advantage that is easy to underestimate. The resort advertises a speedboat journey of about 25 minutes from Velana International Airport. That is the boat leg, not a guarantee of being in your room 25 minutes after landing, but it removes the need for an onward seaplane connection.
For the Saudi islands, arrange the complete connection through the resort, usually via Red Sea International Airport. Boat and seaplane options are advertised, but published timings vary between the resort and destination pages. Ask for your actual route, waiting arrangements and the transport included in your rate. Treat a seaplane upgrade as a purchase with a practical purpose, not an automatic part of the fantasy.
At [Six Senses Laamu](https://10best.world/maldives/places/global-place-aad8d5947e03/), the journey reaches a different part of the Maldivian archipelago. The resort’s current arrival guidance asks guests to coordinate flights with its seaplane service. That makes it a stronger proposition for a longer stay than for a hurried dash in and out. A week allows the transfer to become an opening chapter rather than a disproportionate part of the plot.
Decide what you want from the water
There are at least three different sea holidays hidden inside the phrase “overwater villa”: looking at the lagoon, swimming in it and exploring the marine environment. They overlap, but one does not guarantee the others. Depth, current, entry points and the distance to a worthwhile snorkelling area matter more than the length of the deck.
Baros places its house reef at the centre of its offer. For a couple who want to make snorkelling an ordinary part of the day, that deserves attention. Ask the marine team about the current conditions and the recommended routes for your ability. The presence of a reef is useful information; an assurance that it will look exactly like an old promotional photograph would be something else entirely.
Six Senses Laamu offers a particularly clear reason to choose it if curiosity about the ocean extends beyond spotting something colourful. Its Sea Hub of Environmental Learning in Laamu, known as SHELL, brings marine research and guest education into the resort experience. This gives families and interested adults a way to understand what they are looking at, rather than simply accumulating sightings.
The resort also has a children’s club and family accommodation. For parents, the more useful comparison is therefore between a beach villa with suitable sleeping arrangements and an overwater room chosen mainly for its appearance. Easy access to sand, shade and the main facilities may improve the holiday far more than a dramatic arrival photograph.
The Red Sea has its own underwater appeal. St. Regis advertises access to the Galaxea diving centre on neighbouring Nujuma. That is a reason to investigate the available outings, not to assume every dive or snorkel is included. Establish whether the experience you want leaves from the beach or requires a boat, and whether it is appropriate for beginners. A good diving holiday starts with the operator and conditions, then works backwards to the bedroom.
Give design a job
Nujuma’s architecture offers a persuasive departure from the familiar thatched-roof island idiom. Foster + Partners’ rounded forms borrow from shells, while the villas combine broad views with private pools and telescopes. The resulting proposition is especially appealing to travellers who want the hotel itself to be part of the destination, and who enjoy the relationship between the built object and the landscape around it.
In the Maldives, Baros makes the stronger case for a compact, couples-oriented escape. Six Senses Laamu suits the traveller who wants more of the week to revolve around the marine environment and organised experiences, including activities for children. These are recommendations about fit, not claims that one resort is universally superior.
The detail that changes dinner
Saudi Arabia and the Maldives are not interchangeable settings for an evening. Saudi Arabia’s restrictions on alcohol remain material to a holiday decision; do not assume the international hotel name creates an exception or bring alcohol into the country. In the Maldives, licensed resort settings offer a different dining context from inhabited local islands. Anyone for whom wine with dinner is part of the anticipated experience should make that distinction before paying.
Food costs deserve similar attention. On a remote island, there is little opportunity to wander off in search of a cheaper neighbourhood supper. Compare meal plans, the restaurants to which they apply, supplements and drinks. A beautifully priced villa can become a substantially different purchase once the week’s dinners and transfers are added.
Use the same dates and occupancy when comparing the two destinations. February is a sensible month to investigate for both, but it does not imply identical sea temperatures or guarantee conditions. A water villa with a pool should be compared with the same basic proposition, rather than with the least expensive beach room elsewhere.
Choose Baros for a shorter romantic break where the transfer and reef access carry real weight. Choose Laamu for a longer, ocean-focused stay or a family holiday with more to discover. Put Nujuma first if architectural character and the Red Sea setting excite you; compare St. Regis if you want that coastline with a different resort personality. The right answer is the island that still makes sense when the photograph has been put away.
Plan the trip
For a fair comparison, request five-night quotes for two adults on identical dates, with matching villa type, private-pool provision and meal basis. Add return transfers, taxes, drinks and planned diving before judging value; no date-specific like-for-like rate comparison is asserted here. Check international flight connections before fixing resort dates, particularly where seaplanes are involved. Confirm child ages, sleeping arrangements and water-villa policies directly. Ask marine teams about seasonal conditions and access appropriate to your swimming ability. Saudi Arabia requires particular attention to entry requirements and current guest rules, including alcohol restrictions. Southern Dunes is an inland desert extension, not an island substitute.
