Hamburg is shaped by water: the broad Elbe, the Alster lakes and the canals between its old warehouses. Walk through the red-brick Speicherstadt, take a boat into the working harbour and head up to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza for a view across both old and new Hamburg. The Kunsthalle, neighbourhood restaurants and lively St Pauli give you plenty to do away from the waterfront. Stay longer to explore the gardens and hillside lanes of Blankenese.
