Serengeti rankings
Serengeti is a name that carries more than one place in northern Tanzania, but in geographic and administrative terms it most precisely refers to Serengeti District in Mara Region. This is the gateway district for one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife landscapes, with the Serengeti National Park occupying a major part of the wider area and shaping the region’s global reputation. The district sits on the eastern side of Mara, bordering other Tanzanian districts and reaching toward Kenya, making it a frontier landscape of open plains, seasonal waterways and conservation land. It is best known for safari travel, migration viewing, and access to the broader northern Tanzania circuit. For visitors, the appeal lies in the sense of scale: big skies, long horizons, abundant wildlife and a strong identity tied to one of the world’s most famous national parks. The area is less a single town experience than a broad destination of settlements, reserves and wilderness. Because the name is also used for other local places, including a village, this destination should be treated carefully and not confused with the park alone or with smaller settlements bearing the same name.
